Daylight belongs to the hired gold miners. Nighttime the thieves take over.
In a remote Venezuelan underground mine, there’s an uneasy truce between the two factions. The night crew carries guns, and when they run into a worker for the company that operates the mine it’s understood that nobody will try to stop the men carrying bags of stolen ore.
And as if by osmosis the thieves quickly learn of the discovery of a rich, new vein. And after the legitimate miners go back to their barracks for the night, the men carrying canvas bags and Glock pistols descend into the depths and go directly to the new load.
It’s well known among mining industry insiders that much of the gold produced in Venezuela winds up being smuggled out of the country.
It’s easy to see why. Many hands are helping themselves to the treasure torn from the rock.
