The Fingernail File

They were set to wrap up their last big case and retire to their dream trailer.

The private detective and his gal, Val, knew leaving their longtime home would be hard, and they’d miss the relatives. But it was all relative they decided, and life would be easy and simple in their love nest.

Sadly, their last case didn’t turn out as planned.

His name was William. Call him Bill. His gal did. When she was around. And she’d been getting rounder lately. But she was his, and with a lucrative final case they both faced the future with confidence.

The investigation had seemed routine. Bess had come to them sobbing, saying she’d lost her fake fingernails at the mini mart. They opened a “Fingernail Case” file and wrote down the pertinent information. They outlined steps to track down the missing fingernails.

Bess had wanted to be more glamorous, and had eagerly bought the nails at a chain store.

But then the case became more complicated. Turned out, Bess was mixed up with the Mob.

Steep hill walking

Be careful when you feel sure things will turn out as planned. Sometimes the path is steeper than you expect.

The investigators then learned that Val had repainted her fake nails after getting home from her favorite bar, The Flying Cloud. She’d come up with the cute idea of painting on each nail a number from the Big Boss’s secret phone number. The phone the FBI hadn’t tapped.

The next day she went to the mini mart, and inadvertently left the nails there after they’d become loose and she’d taken them off.

Unfortunately, after the fingernails had been left behind, they were picked up by a loyal worker for the Big Boss, and turned over to him. He learned what Bess had done.

Bess, Bill and Val disappeared one night, never to be seen again. That same night a large quantity of concrete was poured to extend the Big Boss’s driveway.
